BIOMORPHIC : Build Brushes for Stunning Sci-Fi Biomorphic Art

November 28, 2021 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm GMT

Biomorphic art is abstract and refers to living forms such as plants and the human body. H.R. Giger made this kind of artwork more universally known with his signature creature and set designs for some of the Alien films. The idea of using this kind of texturing in sci-fi sets and props is now a solid part of the sci-fi genre! In this webinar class, John Haverkamp shows you the build process for creating biomorphic brushes in ZBrush and applying this unique texturing to a number of DAZ 3D assets that gives them that unique alien or biomorphic look.

Webinar Content

Building Brushes for Biomorphic Art

    • Setting up a brush building test environment in Zbrush
    • Sculpting custom alphas
    • Building custom IMM brushes
    • Using a custom IMM brush to generate custom alphas
    • Customizing stroke settings to control brush behaviour

Now that you have some custom brushes it’s time to combine them

    • It’s the creative and appropriate use of custom brushes that makes Zbrush details work, not just a matter of using a single brush and using like a “solve everything stamp”.

Applying Biomorphic textures to sets

    • ZBrush artist Fain will be showing her own sci-fi set and the “before and after” effect of applying some biomorphic textures

Exploration of the AntFarm’s Alien Corridor Kit

    • We’ll look at the alien qualities of this DAZ Studio sci-fi corridor asset and at community sci-fi corridor artwork.

John Haverkamp : Proven Experience with ZBrush

John Haverkamp was born in Ohio and then moved to the pristine Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia at a young age. There he spent a semi-isolated childhood re-enacting the Lord of the Rings and being corrupted by Dungeons and Dragons. Always with the fondness for the fantastical and medieval, Art school drove him deeper into Luddite territory by granting him the skills of a traditional metal-smith. This meant post-college jobs making copper fountains, welding and steel fabricating, casting and finishing bronze sculptures, and working for an architectural blacksmith throughout his twenties. Digitally, John got sucked into cyberspace and the arcane mysteries of 3D studio max. The perfect software match for John was Zbrush discovered over 12 years ago. Now he teaches digital arts and ZBrush, constantly endeavouring to improve his craft as a digital-sculptor and visualizer through personal work, illustration and indie game projects.
